Maxwell Smart and Agent 99 Encounter A Werewolf
Written by: Jodi Brown, 1967

Chapter 1

Maxwell Smart, known to Control as Agent 86, hopped from his shiny, red sports car and walked into Control headquarters.

As the door slammed behind him he heard, “Max, wait.”

He stopped long enough to let Agent 99 catch up with him, then they continued down the hall.

“Did the Chief call you about a-a werewolf?” 99 asked Max.

“Yes and I think the Chief has a screw loose somewhere,” Max replied.

“Me too.”

Max and 99 come to a phone booth where Max dialed a wrong number. Then they were dropped through a trap door into a very dark hallway.

They came to a door marked “Chief.”

99 knocked and a voice said, “What state has four S’s?”

“Mississippi, Chief,” 99 replied.

Max and 99 walked into the office and Max said, “You’re a smart guy, Chief, but a werewolf? That’s stupid.”

“It may be stupid,” the Chief replied, “But it’s not a lie.” He walked over to the wall and pulled down a map of Australia and pointed to a small area.

“A werewolf was seen in this area,” the Chief said, “It has killed three people in the last week. I want you two to go to this section of Australia to destroy it.”

The Chief looked at Max and 99. “Be careful,” he added.

Two hours later Max and 99 met at the New York Jet Airport.

Max was late of course but only by one minute.

Max could tell by 99’s face that she was scared.

“Don’t be afraid yet, 99,” Max said. “Wait untill we get there.”

Chapter 2

After three hours of flight the jet landed at Quarry National Airport, Australia.

Max and 99 walked into a small restrant.

“Do you know how a werewolf kills someone?” Max asked 99.

99 shook her head. “No,” she said.

“Well, he rips their throte out.”

99 gagged. “Max, why did you have to tell me that?”

“You wanted to know, 99.”

A waiter went by with a large bowl of chili.

“Look, 99,” Max said, pointing.

99 looked and hit Max across the back. “Stop it,” she said.

After they had eaten they asked directions to Cabletown.

One man replied, “Don’t go there. You’ll be in great danger.”

“And loving it!” Max replied. “Now where is Cabletown?”

“About ten miles west,” the man said

Max and 99 hailed a taxi and 99 said, “Take us to Cabletown.”

“No, sireee,” the taxi driver said. “I ain’t going near there.”

Max said to 99, “Let’s walk. Since no one will drive us.”

Max and 99 walked for one hour. Then 99 saw a roadblock in the distance.

“A roadblock, Max, “ she whispered, “Do you think we can get past it?”

“Yes, 99, we can.”

Max pointed to the woods, “We’ll go through there,” he said.

99 looked at him “Through t-t-the w-woods?” she asked.

Max nodded and started toward the woods. 99 followed.

After walking ten minutes Max called a rest period and sat down on a large rock.

Suddenly there was a growl and the werewolf sprang from behind a tall tree.

99 screamed ran over to Max and hid behind him. “Help,” she cried.

The werewolf came closer and closer to Max and 99. Then it sprang apon them.

But it missed them and fell into a small stream five feet behind them. Since there was snow on the ground and it was cold, the water was half water, half ice.

99 gave a sigh and sat down on the rock.

“Max, are you OK?” she asked.

“Yes, 99, I’m allright.”

Max then pointed to the other side of the stream. “He got away,” he said.

“Max,” said 99, “Let’s get going if we want to make it there before dark.”

OK, 99, let’s go,” max said getting up and walking into the woods with 99.

Two hours later they came to a small town. A signpost said Cabletown POP. 205.

Max and 99 walked into a little hotel and asked for a room.

“Room 19, the owner said, “First one on the left on the second floor.”

Max led the way to the room. Once inside 99 said, “Call the Chief, Max before he worries himself to death.”

Max took off his shoe and dialed.

Operator: May I help you, sir?

Max: It’s me, Operator, Max. Please put me through to the Chief.

Operator: OK, Maxie, I’m dialing your Chief.

Max: Oh, Operator, please stay out of our conversation. It’s TOP SECRET!!

Operator: OK, Maxie, I’ll keep out of your little ol’ conversation.

Chief: Chief here.

Max: Chief, are you at headquarters?

Chief: No Max. I’m in room 18 in a little hotel in Cabletown. Where are you?

Max: In room 19 in that little hotel. Meet us in the hall, OK?

Chief: OK, Max. When?

Max: Right now.

Chief: OK Max. See you.

“The Chief is here?” 99 said looking at Max. “Where will we see him?”

“He’ll meet us in the hall.”

“Oh. When?”

“Now.”

99 nodded and stepped into the hall.

“He’s out here,” she shouted.

Max ran up to the Chief.

“What are you doing here, Chief?” he asked.

“Because I thought you might need help,” said the Chief.

“Since when do I need help?”

“Do I have to answer that, Max?”

99 looked behind the Chief and pointed.

“Behind you, Chief,” she whispered.

The Chief whipped around. His hotel room door was shut. All was silent.

“What’s wrong with that, 99,” asked the Chief.

“T-The werewolf is in there,” 99 replied, “I saw him.”

“When?”

“Just before you turned.”

Max went over and looked into the room. The werewolf was sitting on the bed! Max shut the door all the way and said, “He’s in there allright, sitting on your bed.”

“Oh . . . Sitting on my bed!”

“Don’t get all fussed up, Chief, he turned back into a man,” Max replied.

“Oh, good.”

99 looked into the room. The man was gone! 99 poked her head out of the door into the hall. “He’s gone, Max,” she said.

“Oh, no! You must be kidding, 99.”

“I’m not, Max.”

Max looked, “Sorry I doubted you, 99, he is gone.”

“That’s OK, Max.”

The Chief started down the hall.

“Come-on,” he said, “Let’s hunt for him.”

Chapter 3

Max, 99 and the Chief left the hotel and followed the tracks deep into the forest.

They walked for almost three hours, looking in all the places a wolf might hide. Then Max called the group to a halt because it was growing dark.

“Let’s camp here for the night,” Max said starting to build a fire.

“But, Max, we have no tents,” 99 said.

“We’ll sleep on the ground under the stars, 99,” Max replied cheerfully. The hours passed. When all was quiet. Max finally fell asleep.

The howling of a wolf woke the three the next morning. 99 looked into a moving patch of greenery.

“There it is,” she cried, pointing.

Max whipped out his pistol and fired at the werewolf it fell to the ground, dead.

“You did it, Max,” 99 and the Chief said at the same time, “Bless you.”

“Let’s go home, Chief,” said Max putting his pistol away, “We’re through here.”

The three boarded a jet and flew back to New York. The terror in Australia was gone forever.
